Here are some samples of my work including educational handouts and pictures of events that I participated in during the dietetic internship.
Left: A promotional event planned and executed by me called "Taste the Rainbow." The goal was to hand out free samples of a rainbow salad that was a prospect for a grab-and-go item offered at St. Mary's Hospital cafeteria. I collected feedback to predict if this item would be a popular seller. I proposed the idea to the retail manager, created a marketing flyer and prepared 100 samples of the rainbow salad. The feedback I collected encouraged the retail manager to add this item to the grab-and-go options and turned out to be a big hit amongst customers!
Right: Healthbreak is a corporate wellness company based out of Golden, CO. I hosted monthly health fairs to spread awareness of Healthbreak's services. As an activity, I offered free blood pressure and heart rate testing with educational handouts about blood pressure. Encouraging adults to participate was a challenge because most were scared to know what their numbers were and made comments about avoiding the doctor for years. I motivated adults to check their blood pressure with positive remarks like “knowing your numbers puts you in control of your health.”
Left: Being a part of the volunteer team at the Winter Special Olympics was a highlight of my internship. Sodexo’s Dietetic Internship gives students the choice to pick their own sites so you can build the experience you’re looking for. I chose to spend the day as a volunteer for the health promotion event at the Winter Special Olympics. As a dietetics student, I got to run the nutrition screening and education table. I successfully screened and educated over 100 athletes who were competing in the games. I taught athletes how to build a balanced plate with the food groups. I’m thankful I had this opportunity because I have not had much experience working with people with disabilities.
The two pieces featured above are some examples of informative handouts I created. Hover your cursor over each picture and click to download the document. The handout on the left titled "Build a Smart Snack" was used in conjunction with my presentation to a group of seniors about snacks. The handout on the right titled "The Endocrine System" was used with the athlete group at the eating disorder recovery center to educate on hormonal changes in starvation mode.
